How do we empower the dreams of the next generation of African children?
By 2030 there will be 250 million children in Sub-Saharan Africa and yet 171 million lack basic literacy and numeracy skills. At the same time mobile and TV penetration is set to reach 55% by 2021.
I've lived with and visited homes and schools of thousands of children all over Africa's poorest slums and asked them what they dreamed of becoming when they grow up: "Astronauts, engineers, entrepreneurs!" Their responses were more ambitious than what we could ever imagine.
There’s dearth of authentic and original educational content for fast-growing economies, while new media–from gaming to animation to social media–paired with the proliferation of hardware and connectivity provides an unparalleled opportunity to deliver quality educational content at children’s finger tips.
Now's the time to equip the next generation of African children with literacy and numeracy skills and to empower them with the confidence to change their futures.
